Star Wars: Darth Maul: Saboteur

September 3, 2010

Star Wars: Darth Maul: Saboteur Review

James Luceno weaves a short, punchy story in Darth Maul: Saboteur, originally published in e-book format but now included in the paperback edition of Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter. Saboteur sets up the events that kick off Luceno’s novel Cloak of Deception, explaining why the Dorvallan companies chose to contract with the Trade Federation and who drove that decision (three guesses!) With this short story added to the mix, we have what appears to be a completed picture of Maul’s missions before his defeat at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Luceno’s descriptive powers paint an evocative picture of the stifling lommite mines. Maul is not quite as self-sure as he is on his other missions, revising his potential strategy several times as he determines the best course of action. This story fills out why Sidious tapped the Trade Federation for his primary stooges and how the bumbling Nute Gunray came into his lofty position at the top of the organization.

Saboteur makes a nice accent piece to the other pre-The Phantom Menace stories and is worth tracking down.

Star Wars: Darth Maul: Saboteur Overview

A dazzling new short story featuring Darth Maul, merciless apprentice of evil . . .

On the distant planet Dorvalla, precious ore is mined by two competing companies: InterGalactic Ore and Lommite Limited. Neither rival suspects that they are central to a sinister plot masterminded by Darth Sidious, Lord of the Sith, himself.

Dispatched by Sidious on his very first solo mission, Darth Maul infiltrates Lommite Limited. There, his unique gifts of deception and subterfuge will set off an explosive chain of events that could destroy both companies, leaving them ripe for takeover by the Trade Federation. But a vengeful Lommite Limited Manager with his own thirst for retaliation against InterGal could blow Maul’s cover–and all of Sidious’s fiendishly layed plans . . .

Batman: Knightfall, Part One: Broken Bat

Batman: Knightfall, Part One: Broken Bat Review

Knightfall is one of the most ambitious Batman stories ever attempted. This book collects the first and arguably the best part of this story – the breaking of the Batman by Bane (the symbolism of the name is pretty obvious). The story begins with Bane engineering the breakout of all the insane criminals that are housed in Arkham Asylum. All of Batman’s nemeses – The Joker, Scarecrow, Killer Croc and others – are let loose on the streets of Gotham all at once. This is Bane’s clever and twisted strategy to break the Batman.

The plot moves forward in somewhat predictable fashion as Batman takes down each of the escapees in turn. He is mentally disintegrating with each encounter and losing his will to fight. Bane and his henchmen are watching his relentlessly, waiting for the right moment to strike and take him down. The story culminates in a final encounter with between Batman and Bane with the Batman almost at breaking point mentally and physically. He does not offer much resistance and Bane literally and figuratively breaks him. The book ends with the final panel depicting Bane breaking the Batman’s spine. The slow mental disintegration of Batman is the focal point of the storyline and keeps you riveted throughout. While the several sub-plots with the Arkham escapees are of uneven quality some of them are excellent. The one involving the Joker is, predictably, among the best of the lot.

This ranks as one of the best Batman stories ever written and anyone who is intrigued by the character of Batman must pick this one up.

Batman: Knightfall, Part One: Broken Bat Overview

This riveting book sets Batman on a path that will change his life forever. A mass escape from Arkham Asylum and the emergence of Batman’s most threatening foe, Bane, sends Gotham City spinning into chaos and takes Batman to the limits of human endurance! These volume is required reading for every Batman fan. Graphic novel format.

Batman: Knightfall, Part One: Broken Bat Specifications

Broken Bat is the first of two volumes collecting Knightfall, the much-talked about Batman storyline–much talked about because it was the story in which Batman gets defeated. The huge, muscle-bound villain Bane has but one goal in mind, to break Batman. The end of this volume is somewhat shocking compared to standard, mainstream comic book continuity.

The Goon Volume 1: Nothin’ But Misery (Goon (Graphic Novels)) (v. 1)

August 31, 2010

The Goon Volume 1: Nothin’ But Misery (Goon (Graphic Novels)) (v. 1) Review

Combine the wild horror of Hellboy, the Depression-era atmosphere of the Rocketeer, and the wacky, outrageous humor of Sam and Max, and you get Eric Powell’s Goon.

Who is the Goon? A mighty, scarred, granite-jawed, two-fisted mountain of a man who, with his sidekick, Frankie, runs all of the crime rackets in the dead-end slums of a no-name city while, at the same time, keeping it safe from the marauding undead armies resurrected by the Nameless Zombie Priest. Weird? Sure. Wacky? You bet. Fun? Absolutely.

The Good: Powell knows his audience. He blends obscure pop culture references with some out-of-left-field humor, as well as a healthy dose of zombie-kicking fun, and makes what you might call a nifty companion comic to Mike Mignola’s Hellboy. It’s drawn in a cartoony fashion, but that actually adds to, rather than detracts from, the antics. Powell is also able to bring out a surprising amount of pathos in his characters. There really isn’t an ongoing storyline in this volume, just interconnected short tales, and that seems to work just fine.

The Bad: Really, I didn’t have much to complain about. If I had to complain about something, it would be the one-note plots (Joke, then zombie shows up, joke while beating up zombie, then joke finale), though even that isn’t bothersome.

If you’re a fan of zombies, Hellboy, or a good, funny comic, give The Goon a try!

The Goon Volume 1: Nothin’ But Misery (Goon (Graphic Novels)) (v. 1) Overview

Bones will be broken and heads will roll! The Goon is a laugh-out-loud action-packed romp through the streets of a town infested with zombies. An insane priest is building himself an army of the undead, and there’s only one man who can put them is their place: the man they call Goon. Collects The Goon series and The Goon Color Special, originally published by Albatross Exploding Funny Books; presented here for the first time in full color.

Invincible: The Ultimate Collection Volume 5

August 29, 2010

Invincible: The Ultimate Collection Volume 5 Review

Don’t let the bright, bright colors and the very cool art and all the exuberant superhero antics fool you. There’s a sort of camouflaged complexity to INVINCIBLE, underneath that shiny sense of fun, and that’s only one more layer which Robert Kirkman consistently weaves into his world-building and storytelling. It seems like only yesterday when I first picked up this comic book, and look at it now, about to hit the 75th issue mark, clearly having stood the test of time. And the same nod goes to Kirkman’s other monumental title, THE WALKING DEAD. At this stage, Mark Grayson, teenaged powerhouse, has become an established superhero, the go-to savior of the world. But he’s still learning.

INVINCIBLE: ULTIMATE COLLECTION Volume 5 collects issues #48-59 of the ongoing series, as well as ASTOUNDING WOLF-MAN #11, meaning that if you already have the trades INVINCIBLE Vol. 10: WHO’S THE BOSS? and INVINCIBLE Vol. 11: HAPPY DAYS, then you’ve already peeped this bunch of goodies. What’s striking about this particular run is that it doesn’t seem to feature a consistent thru thread, unless you count the arc which develops Invincible’s younger half-brother, Oliver, whose own powers manifest in early, astronomical fashion. We follow Oliver’s acclimation as a fledgling superhero under Invincible’s wing, and it’s interesting that the kid means to redeem the reputation of his hero-turned-villain father. And so he assumes the codename “Kid Omni-Man.’ The most fascinating theme in these issues, for me anyway, is the clash between Oliver’s pragmatic worldview and Mark’s more humane principles. This is one of the things Robert Kirkman, a dynamite writer, really excels at. He raises morality issues but offers no pat resolutions, although the characters do engage in meaningful conversations about them. Kirkman always sets a torrid pace. He throws in oodles of other story arcs. Except that, in this particular stretch of issues, those story arcs don’t feel epic.

Friendly warning: The following may be fraught with SPOILERS and, also, with words like “fraught.”

Kirkman, possibly comic books’ premier dabbler in the realm of pure superhero escapism, keeps on cavorting in his personal playground, guest-starring plenty of his other created characters as well as other established characters from Image Comics. The first arc here deals with Mark Grayson’s falling out with Cecil Stedman and the Global Defense Agency, as Mark leans that Stedman is even more underhanded than first suspected. Also, Dr. Seismic launches his big power play, utilizing his legions of Underearths to capture most of the world’s superheroes. This gives us a chance to feast our eyeballs on the likes of the Dynamo 5, Savage Dragon, the Capes, the Guardians of the Globe, and the Astounding Wolf-Man rubbing elbows in shared captivity. Invincible and Atom Eve dramatically fly in to save the day. Except that they don’t.

I don’t know exactly what it is about Atom Eve that I like so much. Maybe it’s her awesome power set, or maybe it’s that she’s simply this hot babe, and yet she acts like that down-to-earth girl next door. Anyway, there’s solid progression in her relationship with Mark, although Mark’s ex-girlfriend manages to briefly pop up.

Ryan Ottley’s artwork is clean and crisp and dynamic and so dang perfect for this comic book. And Robert Kirkman keeps you guessing. You just never know in which direction this dude is gonna swerve. Predictably, he peppers in a few shocking moments in these pages, again reminding readers that the contents here aren’t suited for the younger kids. As always, Kirkman ushers in new plotlines even as he closes off existing ones. Somewhere in this trade we get sucked into a gang turf war and there’s a catch-up interlude with Allen the Alien, still imprisoned in a space vessel, and with Omni-Man, Mark and Oliver’s dad, who is still scheduled for execution. There’s a nifty crossover with Gary Hampton, a.k.a. the Astounding Wolf-Man. Gary is a fugitive wanted for his wife’s murder, and Mark gets roped into bringing him in. Later, Mark and Eve, looking ahead financially, venture into freelance superheroing. Mark responds to a plea for help from the future and runs into an old friend. At the hind end of the volume, we get wind of Kirkman’s next epic arc as the demented genius Angstrom Levy, after months of discreetly spying on Mark, finally launches his revenge scheme against Invincible. But, in issue #59, we don’t have to wait to see how supervillain Powerplex’s revenge play turns out.

End SPOILERS.

To commemorate having achieved the 50th issue landmark, Mark Grayson gets new superhero threads (even though he didn’t ask for a makeover). Oliver also gets outfitted, and his costume is actually cooler looking than Mark’s. And because absolutely no one asked for it, there’s also Cecil Stedman’s secret origin revealed.

As ever with these terrific Ultimate editions, there’s a ton of extra goodies in the form of Ryan Ottley’s sketches and cover art with behind-the-scenes commentary from Kirkman and Ottley. The script for issue #50 is also reproduced (in very, very small print). As fun as they are to read, I do get the sense that most of the stories in ULTIMATE INVINCIBLE Volume 5 are of the tread-the-water variety, filler stuff while Kirkman preps for the massive events about to go down. I collect the individual issues, so I know what I’m talking about. Devastating, earth-shaking stuff is about to go down! ULTIMATE INVINCIBLE Volume 6 can’t come soon enough. Still, this Volume 5 is still very much worth the get, even if its sense of epic isn’t as “epic” as in the previous editions. But no one blends those personal little moments and those large scale, world-hanging-in-the-balance moments quite as exquisitely as Kirkman. And no one draws his stuff as invigoratingly as Ryan Ottley. This applies to Volume 5.

POKÉMON ADVENTURES, VOLUME 3 (2ND EDITION) (Pokémon Adventures) Review

The 3rd and final volume about Red contains the final showdown with Team Rocket and Red’s adventures with the Pokémon Challenge (not to be confused with the Indigo League from the games). Not much more to say without ruining the fun.

I really like how the gym leaders are involved in this series.

The story s true to the Pokémon universe.

SPOILER:
I’m not convinced that Oak sholud’ve treated Green the way he ended up doing. Had she really earned it after all the things she had done? Her reason for stealing the Squirtle didn’t excuse her actions at all. I’d have liked a sequel to show how she turned out after that.

The Sandman Vol. 7: Brief Lives

August 25, 2010

The Sandman Vol. 7: Brief Lives Review

The best volume of the Sandman series yet brings Dream and his sister Delirium in search of their long lost brother Destruction. Destruction left the world of the Endless several hundred years ago to pursue his own life – ironically creating many things such as paintings, poems, sculptures and food.

Along the way, Delirium and Dream run into many old acquaintances of Destruction, and naturally certain things happen to them…unfortunately in the search for Destruction, one of the repercussions is destruction of his old friends.

Brief Lives is the most exciting and entertaining volume of the Sandman series thus far, shedding new light on his family and his development and growth. We see throughout the entire volume what strange musings Delirium has to offer, and perchance one of the most entertaining and likable characters thus far in the series in Destruction. His desire to create, combined with his sense of humor and his remarkably realistic laugh makes for an extremely likable character that won’t be forgotten.

Aside from the advancements of the characters of Delirium and Dream (and Despair), one thing not only evident from the volume itself but through remarks of various other characters is Dream’s development. Each makes a comment that Dream has changed – including his own son, Orpheus – and it is clear by the end of the volume that Dream feels the same way.

Gaiman does a wonderful job developing the Endless in Brief Lives, and has many remarkable comments about gods and dreams/destiny, including:

“I know how gods begin, Roger. We start as dreams. Then we walk out of dreams into the land. We are worshipped [sic] and loved, and take power to ourselves. And then one day there’s no one left to worship us. And in the end, each little god and goddess takes its last journey back into dreams…and what comes after, not even we know.” (ch. 5, page 20)

and

“…while you [Dream] are prince of those symbols and shapes that mean other than they seem, of metaphor and of allusion, my [Destiny] dominion is that which is, of actions and consequences and paths.” (ch. 6, page 9)

All in all, Brief Lives provides the most in-depth, remarkable and fully entertaining volume of the Sandman series so far, with unique looks at various characters of the Endless and with excellent insights into the world of the Sandman – and our own world – by Neil Gaimain. Definitely not a volume to be missed.

The Sandman Vol. 7: Brief Lives Overview

Delirium, youngest brother of the Endless, prevails upon her brother, Dream, to help her find their missing sibling. Their travels take them through the world of the waking until a final confrontation with the missing member of the Endless and the resolution of Dream’s relationship with his son change the endless forever. .

The Sandman Vol. 7: Brief Lives Specifications

One might think that the climax of the 10-volume Sandman series would come in the last book, or even the second to last. But indeed the heart and soul of Neil Gaiman’s magnum opus lies here in Brief Lives. It could be because one of the most central mysteries–that of the Sandman’s missing brother–is revealed here (in fact, the plot of this volume is the search for this member of the Endless). It could be because everything that comes after this volume, however surprising or unexpected, is inevitable. But it’s more because this is a story about mortality and loss, the difficulty of change, the purpose of remembering, the purpose of forgetting, and the importance of humanity. If you have wanted to find out what all the good buzz on this great comic book series is about and haven’t read any Gaiman before, don’t be turned off by this volume’s pivotal position in the larger story of the Sandman series. This book might actually operate better as a stand-alone story, in that its depth and compassion are more condensed, pure, and brief. –Jim Pascoe

Astonishing X-Men, Vol. 4: Unstoppable

Astonishing X-Men, Vol. 4: Unstoppable Review

Astonishing X-men has been one of those series that is hard to stop reading. It’s so intelligent and entertaining that I feel smarter after reading it. Whedon has an incredible talent for cinematic storytelling and I bet by now all of us wish this could be directly translated into a film. The characterization and interaction is so well structured and utilized, that we love every character. So when all the characters split up there is no difference in entertainment between each of their paths. It’s all astonishing!

The ending to Whedon’s story is very profound and impressive. I do want to read the whole series over for clarification, but you should be able to graps the main components of the story. Vol. 3 and 2 got a little complex, but I think this one wraps it up very nice and neat. When I read, I can tell Whedon is having fun throwing in twists and foreshadowings, so that I may feel anxious for the next panel. There are times when a piece of dialogue makes no sense, and then at the turn of a page there is a huge revelation to that line. I was blown away by how original and powerful that method had been used. The creators of this comic series know how to be different from all the others, and yet be just as entertaining if not more than the rest.

The Sandman Vol. 5: A Game of You

August 17, 2010

The Sandman Vol. 5: A Game of You Review

I can’t help but think of The Maxx Volume 1 (Wildstorm/DC Comics)) as I read A Game of You – after all, both entail the stories of young women pulled into their fantasy world and the play between the two, complete with heroes, princess fantasies, and a desire to be something else, something more. Of course, whereas The Maxx’s fantasy world was a more direct window into Julie’s psyche, Gaiman’s dream world is infinitely more flexible and less predictable, leading to a far stranger and more threatening fantasy – to say nothing of the way that reality itself is far less stable than we might expect (and our first glimpse of that is an absolutely stellar reveal). And while The Maxx focused on feminism and its corresponding view of the world, A Game of You becomes concerned more fundamentally with identity – gender identity, yes, but also the nature of who we really are and who we allow ourselves to be. Of all the Sandman volumes I’ve read so far, A Game of You is probably the most complex and the one most open to interpretation, and like the best literature, the questions it inspires are as fascinating, if not more so, than definite answers. Gaiman spins a two-teired tale, but eschews the standard interplay between a princess’s quest to save her land and her real-life world in favor of something far more complex – a universe more interested in chromosomes than names, dead faces that tell jokes, and more. Despite Morpheus’s relatively small part in the story, don’t neglect this one; it’s one of the richest and most satisfying chapters yet.

The Sandman Vol. 5: A Game of You Overview

You may have heard somewhere that Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series consistedof cool, hip, edgy, smart comic books. And you may have thought, “What the helldoes that mean?” Enter A Game of You to confound the issue even more, while at the same time standing as a fine example of such a description. This is not an easy book. The characters are dense and unique, while their observations are, as always with Gaiman, refreshingly familiar. Then there’s the plot, which grinds along like a coffee mill, in the process breaking down the two worlds of this series, that of the dream and that of the dreamer. Gaiman pushes these worlds to their very extremes–one is a fantasy world with talking animals, a missing princess, and a mysterious villain called the Cuckoo; the other is an urban microcosm inhabited by a drag queen, a punk lesbian couple, and a New York doll named Barbie. In almost every way this book sits at 180 degrees from the earlier four volumes of the Sandman series–although the less it seems to belong to the series, the more it shows its heart. –Jim Pascoe
